Playing with my f stop

I have been borrowing this 50mm lens from a friend. The f/stop on it is 1.8. I decided to play with that f/stop a bit to see what the comparisons would be with different F/stops. Here are two of the pictures that I took:

Pink flower. Have NO idea what kind it is. :z) The F stop on this picture is F/9. You can see so much of the detail of the flower because the aperture is so high.

Here is the same flower at pretty much the same angle only shot with an extremely low F/stop of 1.8.

See the difference? Pretty incredible isn't it?

You basically cannot tell what is in focus unless you look really close.

I would love to have some comments on this post. Give a few votes on what you think would be the better f/stop. Is it better to use a low f/stop or a high one?

My personal opinion would be to get a balance between the two. F/1.8 is a little low but F/9 is not as pretty either. Can't wait to hear your opinion!

The Best F-stop?? hmm... that's a really hard decision. It depends on what I'm photographing I guess. For close ups of people I like F/9 But if I want to include more of the background in the picture then I'd chose a lower F stop like 5.6 so as to blur the background more. In low lighting situations f/36 works better for me cause it makes the picture less orange. I'm not sure what I prefer with flower pictures though. I guess somewhere around 5.6 possibly a little lower or higher then that. I haven't really done much bokeh but don't most people prefer a really low F-stop for that?

I'm not much of a photographer, but I defenitaly would have to say the one with the higher f-stop (whatever that is lol ;) is definitaly the better picture. ;)
